About InspirationI love to try to capture the beauty I see all around. What really excites me is the effect of light - sunlight and shadow - and the colors that can be seen in shadows and reflected light if one looks closely. Whether my subject is an urban landscape, a garden view, or a person in a room near a window, I’'m always chasing the light. I am constantly inspired by nature and by the works of great artists of the past and present - such as the portraits painted by John Singer Sargent and the light-filled paintings of Joaquin Sorolla. I have found some of my favorite subject matter in Portugal, where I grew up, and I also enjoy painting life in the city where I now live.ExhibitionsMy paintings have been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States, including the Gallery Americana in Carmel, California; Galerie Kornye in Dallas and Galerie Kornye West in Fort Worth, Texas; Greenwich Workshop Gallery in Fairfield, Connecticut; Museum of American Illustration and The Salmagundi Club in New York City; and Whistle Pik Galleries in Fredericksburg, Texas. I have taught and guest lectured at several colleges and universities in Texas and have given many private painting workshops.PortraitsMy portrait commissions have taken me across the United States and to England. My works include the official portrait of former Texas Governor Ann Richards, which hangs in the State Capitol in Austin, portraits for the National Institutes of Health, Southern Methodist University, Texas Instruments and Frito Lay, as well as many portraits for families."A Year in Fort Worth" ProjectI've been given the opportunity to spend the year 2011 painting people, places and events in my hometown, Fort Worth, Texas, to culminate in a book and a show of my work at Galerie Kornye West in early 2012. I'll be documenting my progress on my blog, ayearinfortworth.com, by posting sketches, watercolor studies, oil paintings and videos throughout the year.
